Record Sleeve cover for The Cure

The final cover design, signed by Robert Smith.

In 2012 I was one of the winners of the Secret 7” competition to design a record sleeve cover for ‘Friday I’m in Love’ by The Cure.

The idea was simple: artists from all over the world would pick one of the songs listed to make an record sleeve cover for.

The pieces would then be displayed in a gallery, with a catch; no one would know what artwork was for which song. The artwork was then auctioned off, with proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

My entry was hand-picked (and later signed by) Richard Smith himself.

My concept was sweet and simple: Friday I’m in Love is a song about being in love; how despite everything else going on, everything is alright as long as you’re with your loved one.

With that in mind, I decided to focus on the feeling of being in love; of walking on air. Despite the gloomy, dark surroundings, nothing can quash the feeling of being in love.
